Biography |
Dr. Shivakumar Raman, a tenured full-professor in IE, is David Ross Boyd Professor, and John A. Myers Professor in Engineering. Earlier, he held a S.R. Noble Foundation Presidential Professorship. He teaches courses in the areas of materials, manufacturing processes and metrology. He is an Elected Fellow of 3 major engineering societies: SME, ASME and IIE. He is the current Scientific Committee Chair (Chief Editor) for the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME (NAMRI/SME) and also serves on its Board of Directors (2008-2010).
He has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Manufacturing Systems and Journal of Manufacturing Processes (both of SME), and ASME Transactions: Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering; and as an editorial board member for IIE Transactions (Journal of Design and Manufacturing), and International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing (KSPE). He has organized satellite symposia in advanced manufacturing processes and advanced materials for ASME. He was the Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED) program chair for ASME in the National Manufacturing Week (NMW) 2003 and 2004. He was also the MED program committee chair for ASME IMECE 2005, and organized 37 sessions in manufacturing engineering.
He has published 130 articles in journals, conference proceedings and edited books. As a PI or Co-PI, he has received funding for the University of Oklahoma through 42 external grants, for research and education, totaling $10 Million. He has received 12 separate grants from the NSF (10 as PI). He is the PI on the Economic Development Generating Excellence (EDGE) grant from the state of Oklahoma. This grant will research and develop Shape Engineering for Advanced Manufacturing (SEAM) specifically focused on the aerospace sector. As the executive director of the SEAM Enterprise he received the Journal Record’s Innovator of the Year Award (2009).
He has developed two laboratories for instruction/ research within the department. For undergraduates, he supplements this training with a "hands-on" laboratory conducted in collaboration with the Moore-Norman Technology Center.
At the international level, he is a recipient of the IIE Outstanding Young Industrial Engineer Award (1998), SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award (1994), ASEE (Midwest) Section Outstanding Teaching Award (2000), SAE Ralph Teetor Educational Award (1995), ASME Fellow Award (2006), IIE Fellow Award (2007), SME Fellow Award (2008), and SME Dick Aubin Outstanding Paper Award (2008). In 2008 he was recognized by the SIES institution in Mumbai, India as one of its 75 Eminent Alumni, at its 75th year anniversary celebrations. At OU he has won the IIE Student Chapter's Outstanding Professor (5 times - 1997, 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2006; voted by the IE students), OU Regents' Award for Superior Teaching (1997), University of Oklahoma Students Association (UOSA) Outstanding Faculty Award (Engineering) (2000), and OU College of Engineering's Engineering Excellence Distinguished Lecturer Award (4 times - 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998). He also was an invited participant to the Oklahoma Outstanding Professors Academy in 1999-2000.
